The Million Dollar Idea: A Pixel of Internet History

In 2005, while I was in ,working part-time at a PC sales and service center, I stumbled upon a story that captivated the world of tech and business. It was about a young 21-year-old named Alex Tew, from Wiltshire, England, who was facing a familiar struggle—finding a way to pay his college fees.

But Alex wasn’t just any student. He came up with a simple yet revolutionary idea that would soon make headlines in international newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal. His creation? A website with just a single page.

What made it special? The homepage was divided into a grid of 1000 x 1000 pixels, creating one million total pixels. He then sold these pixels in blocks of 10x10 for $1 per pixel, allowing buyers to place small images, logos, or text, with each block linking to their respective websites. This concept especially attracted small businesses that couldn't afford pricey online ads but still wanted to stake their claim on the internet.

After just five months, in January 2006, the final 1,000 pixels were auctioned off on eBay, fetching an astounding $38,000, bringing Alex’s total earnings to $1,037,100.

This is the story of The Million Dollar Homepage—a piece of internet history, and a reminder of how a simple idea can change everything.
